Tachodisc In The News

New digitach paper standards will be introduced on 1st October 2011

Since the introduction of Digital Tachographs, Tachodisc has been calling on the EU to set a quality standard for the paper used to print out data from the Vehicle Unit, and now legislation will come into force 1st October 2011. This will be in line with the updated specification of the digital tachograph and the amends to Annex 1B of the Drivers’ Hours regulations.

The new standard will mean that all digital paper rolls from 1st October 2011 will have to meet a number of key criterion i.e. heat resistance, low temperature resistance and light resistance etc.  This is to ensure the printouts shall remain clearly legible and identifiable under normal conditions of storage,  for at least one year.

“Where the printout is used as a legal document it must be kept for 12 months – or for two years if its being used to record Working Time data.  This requires the print on the paper used to be legible for that period of time.  For this reason, and because we understand the legislation and the importance of this documentation, Tachodisc has always manufactured high quality printer rolls to this level of specification.”

“It also means Tachodisc is ready to be able to help customers now, in preparation for when the legislation comes into force in October,” confirms Karen.

Tachodisc’s expertise in manufacturing analogue charts and dealing with the grades of wax coated paper required, gives the company the knowledge to understand the need for a specification of the grade of paper used in roll manfacture. “There are many low quality paper rolls on the market, and the problem with this is that the ink can fade on poor quality paper if it is exposed to sunlight or grease for example” says Karen Crispe, Managing Director of Tachodisc.  “We recommend that users ensure they are using the correct specification of paper.”
