There is no doubt using a sat nav can make planning a route and reaching your destination a lot easier, however, it is important that it is used correctly to safeguard against driver distraction which can potentially increase the risk of having an accident.
It is illegal to obstruct the driver’s view of the road so positioning the sat nav correctly is essential. The key is to position the device so having to look away from the road to check the screen is minimal. Ensuring the voice level on the device is audible will also reduce the need to refer to the screen.
Most importantly, the destination should be set prior to setting off, reducing the inclination to interact with the device whilst driving. We are all well aware that the sat nav is a great driving aid, but remember it is only to assist, it does not take away the importance of the driver focussing on the driving conditions, responding to traffic signs and weather conditions. All road users safety is paramount - using sat navs safely and legally will not jeopardise road safety but used correctly will provide an easy and stress-free experience for the driver.
